Treichel in Financial Advisor Magazine: Why Clients With More Than ‘Enough’ Still Struggle In Retirement

“Bonnie Treichel, chief solutions officer at Endeavor Retirement, said that imbalance plays out both professionally and personally. She described the contrast between her own parents—one who built a full, purposeful retirement life, and another who entered it with no plan at all. ‘My mom filled her bingo card with every activity under the sun,’ she said. ‘My dad had nothing on his. And that created tension in their marriage.’

The data behind those tensions is sobering. Treichel noted that surveys show roughly 20% of retirees report experiencing depression, while 25% to 30% say they feel unmotivated. At the same time, about 85% say that having a sense of meaning is essential to a successful retirement.

‘That tells you where the gap is,’ she said. ‘We talk so much about the number, but if 85% of people are telling us they need meaning, then we have to help them figure out where that’s going to come from.'”
