Why Everyone Wants Lifetime Income, But Few Take It
At the recent NAPA 401(k) Summit in Las Vegas, industry experts Bonnie Treichel, Chief Solutions Officer at Endeavor Retirement, Allie Rivera with One Digital, and Jeffrey Graton with SageView explored a key question: Why do so many Americans want guaranteed lifetime income, yet few use their 401(k)s to secure it?
In the session, Treichel explained that while the SECURE Act made it easier to offer lifetime income, complexity still holds back adoption.
Treichel noted a shift in advisor conversations—from why offer it to how to implement it. Advisors are now asking tactical questions about investment policy changes and how to engage plan sponsors.
Still, because participants rarely ask for these options directly, many plan sponsors hesitate. Treichel emphasized that it’s a fiduciary responsibility to understand and present these solutions so plan sponsors can make informed decisions.
